HEKA

Intelligent agent that helps students with stress management

Group project with Albert Szabo, Alisha Hidayat, Daria Ritzi, Iulia Lung

My roles: UX/UI design, user research, and 3D modeling

Background

Many students experience stressful periods during their studies, negatively affecting their mental well-being and leading to procrastination.

In this project, we focused on “ How can we prevent and elevate stressful study sessions through the use of the intelligent agent concept?”

Research

The research on the emotional detection scheme using facial skin temperature and heart rate variability by Kahil Mustafa Jamal S et al. (2019) was reviewed. Research showed that  5 spots on the face: the nose, glabellar line, right and left cheeks, and the chin in combination with Heart Rate Variability (HRV) could identify emotional states. Therefore temperature and HRV were decided to be used for stress detection

Shape explorations

The first iteration of the design was divided into two distinct parts: a hub housing the screen and a separate component comprising a stress ball.

Stress ball was included in the design for use in times of stress. The screen was decided to be used for feedback, alerts, and necessary functionalities. Plant features were implemented as they are perceived as friendly.

Second itteration and Physical prototype

Through the circular nature of the design process, we decided that a more simplistic, round shape could be more suitable for a variety of users. The stress ball design was inspired by the Lotus flower as it is a symbol of purification of mind. 3D models and physical prototypes were made.

User tests

We interviewed users to gather more data on how they behave in times of stress to provide the most effective solution that fits the purpose of stress alleviation.

Our team prepared various samples for the prototype testing. The samples differed in terms of texture, heating, haptic feedback, and petal movements of the lotus. We have also gathered data on aesthetic preferences for Heka.

Final concept

After analyzing the data, we made design decisions and came to our final idea through the preferences of users.

We have discarded the stress ball and replaced it with the function of fidgeting with the petals of Heka. The petals would react to touch and move. For feedback, Heka would open up to remind the user for a break, and the user can either fidget with Heka or take the 4-6-8 breathing exercises it offers.

Mockup Application

We have decided to place our product in libraries and study spaces where it's accessible to all students. To be able to keep their private data safe we made an application.

The users can track their data on the application, such as stress levels, heart rate, and skin temperature. The app also gives a daily and weekly analysis to help students be more aware of their data. The application also has a page for special blog recommendations.
